Hi everyone – We have our 2nd Blog Assignment:

Tell us about your platform, why you chose it, what it means to you and what you would do as Miss Teenage Canada to promote that platform.

My platform is to raise awareness for sick and disadvantaged children.  Too many children suffer in this world due to illness or social circumstances.  Too many children live in poverty and don’t have access to proper nutrition which can impact their ability to learn, play, and grow.  Alicia Recital 2

My platform is important to me because I love children and they deserve to be happy and healthy and should enjoy life.  Children are innocent beings and should not suffer hardships and pain in their younger years.11075042_10152754525421752_515992813_n 11121104_10152754525566752_1622686157_nI plan to be a pediatric nurse one day so that I can help make a difference in their lives.  I plan to work with children and their families.  I am a caring person and I would like to help others when they need it the most.  I also value living a healthy, active lifestyle and I feel that I would be a good role model to young children and youth so that they can aspire to lead a healthy life as well.  Living a clean life can prevent many illnesses and can have a positive impact on our longer term health overall.11178422_10152802078946752_442194371_n

Millstream Fun Fair 7I have appreciated fundraising for the Free the Children Charity.  It has been a valuable and rewarding experience to learn and be apart of this organization and the work that they do.  Free the Children founders Mark and Craig, encourage youth to become empowered to take action both locally and globally to influence positive change in the world.  I really like this “call to action” and feel that Miss Teenage Canada encourages us to all do this.Thrifty's foods - fundraising 10320415_1863403240550972_3835619942257467774_nBottle Drive

As part of my platform, in addition to fundraising for Free the Children, I have focused most of my efforts around supporting children’s charities and events such as:

  • Foster Children’s Easter Egg Hunt
  • Times Colonist 10K – Family Fun Run
  • Touch-a-truck pediatric cancer fundraiser event
  • Various Elementary school fun fairs
  • Children’s Summer Camp – dance introduction

Truck event 2 Truck event 420150724_210807 (Medium)

I have also signed on as a volunteer for the Vancouver Island Health Authority and when I get back from Toronto I will be volunteering for various pediatric programs at Victoria General Hospital and Westshore Health Unit.

If crowned Miss Teenage Canada I would be thrilled to use this opportunity to grow awareness around my platform and would like to continue to fund raise for Free the Children and visit one of the sites to contribute my help directly, as well as volunteer at a We Day event.  I would also like to continue to promote and support various local and national charities that support children.  I would be honoured to be a spokesperson for a local children’s charity and help to fund raise within my community as well.

The Miss Teenage Canada pageant is more than a “beauty” contest as many may think.  This is an opportunity for young women to be leaders in their communities and to make a positive difference in this world.  I am so grateful for every opportunity that this journey has given me  – in order to give back to others.  I would encourage everyone to get involved in what matters to them!!

The last couple of days have been so amazing.  I had the good fortune of being invited to speak about my journey to Miss Teenage Canada on several morning shows at our local radio stations.  20150729_180751 (Large)

First I visited Michael Forbes and Lisa Marshall on the OCEAN 98.5.  This was my very first radio interview!!  They made me feel so relaxed that it did not even feel like an interview and when it was over I was surprised to be done!   They are going to follow my time in Toronto and I plan to give them updates on how it goes!  Listen here to the interview.

The 2nd interview I did was with their sister station – KISS FM 103.1.  I joined Matt Soper for a live interview!  Normally Matt is accompanied by Vanessa but she was off on vacation.  Matt was so amazing and sweet.  I was really nervous about doing a live show but he made me feel right at home and his energy and enthusiasm got me excited to talk about my journey.  Later driving home I heard Matt giving me some more shout outs on the radio!20150730_174539 (Large)  What an amazing experience.

It just feels so surreal that in a few days I will be heading off to Toronto to live out this dream!  Can’t wait to be there and meet all of the other delegates!!

20150724_200248 (Medium)I spent a day with a group of great kids at the F.U.N. (Friends Uniting for Nature) Summer Camp.  I was asked to come and spend some time with the kids teaching them some dance moves.  They were such an awesome group – and very quick learners!  We started with introductions and I told them a bit about my dance experience and journey to Miss Teenage Canada.  They all introduced themselves as well.

20150724_185922 (Medium)20150724_185928 (Medium)
After some initial fun and games and floor work, they got down to business and learned a dance in one morning!  Gradually I added in choreography and by lunch time they were grooving to a pretty fast-paced song!

20150724_190540 (Medium)20150724_191332 (Medium)20150724_191422 (Medium)

The kids ranged in ages from 6 – 13 and many of them had never danced before.  It was such a great day and they were so fun and hard working.

I loved every minute of it and it really combined my passion for dance with my love of helping kids.  They wished me good luck at the Miss Teenage Canada pageant as I said goodbye and told me to “win it for Victoria”!

20150614_200916Alicia's Grad 2015 062

This year marks my graduation from High School and it was very bitter-sweet.  The year feels like it went by way too fast but I have so many special memories to take away from it.

It is exciting to begin a new chapter in my life but at the same time it is sad to know that all my friends will be taking different journeys in their lives and this means we won’t be together like we once were.  I have friends who are off to explore the world and others heading away to university in other cities.

Alicia's Grad 2015 068My grad year was filled with lots of good times and hours of laughter and fun.  It was so great to hit the stage for the final grad ceremony and to be recognized for the hard work we have accomplished.  I will miss many of the teachers that helped us to be successful and most of all I will my advanced dance academy teacher and fellow students.  I plan to come back in the fall and help with some of the dance classes though –  so won’t be leaving it altogether.Alicia's Grad 2015 072

My plans are to start school in the fall working towards my aspirations to become a nurse.  I also start volunteering at the hospital next week and it will be good to help me get familiar with the hospital environment while giving back to my community at the same time.  I am excited to get started!

11111880_10152913358756752_3803914608857462583_n Alicia's Grad 2015 191My parents threw a grad party for me and my sister and brother – since my sister is moving on to high school and my brother graduated college.

On to the next chapter of my life and what could be more exciting that to be starting it by entering into the Miss Teenage Canada National Pageant!!  I can’t wait!!  So excited and nervous all at the same time for what lies ahead.  Three Cheers for the Grads of 2015!

Last weekend I was fortunate to be able to take part in the Pride Week festivities happening in my hometown.  I joined in on the Parade that marshalled floats, cars, and walkers alike down Government Street and ended in a park in James Bay.

20150705_213815.1The Pride parade was amazing!  There were so many onlookers there to cheer us on and it was definitely the most colourful and fun parade I have seen.

Everyone was upbeat and cheering as we danced our way along the route!  I was joined by a group of friends and family, including some of my advanced dance company dancers.  We entertained the crowds along the way!

20150705_214808.1The Pride parade was important to me because it celebrates people and sends a strong message that LOVE is Healthy and youth that are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgendered should not be discriminated against.

This is my first blog assignment and it’s a good one!  The question was:  Tell the world why Canada is great!  That is an easy question because there are so many things to love about Canada!  To make it a little fun I came up with a top 10 list of why Canada is so great.  I hope you enjoy it!!!

#10 – Canadians are so polite.  We are very well known for apologizing for everything.  This quality makes Canadians come across as genuine and caring (which we are of course)!  They are also very friendly and I have had so many people come up to me and congratulate me on my title as Miss Teenage Victoria.

#9 – Our great outdoors!  The Canadian landscape is breathtaking and amazing.  From our oceans, to our thousands of lakes, to our mountain peaks.  We have stunning geography!  On the west coast I walk trails and hike all the time – the beauty takes my breath away.  I also love to spend time on the lake every summer with my family and friends boating and doing water activities.

11021125_10152676726686752_3944631602490715462_n1116133_10151528285091752_74043685_o11401561_10152889655121752_2034807367150371487_n 10250313_10152016026336752_1124353669315442500_n

#8 – Tim Hortons – Who doesn’t love Tim Horton’s.  It is a staple in our household.  My mom only drinks Tim Horton coffee and I love their green tea.  It is also a great place to meet up with friends and socialize – before, during, and after school.

#7 – Hockey – Who doesn’t play or know someone who plays hockey.  Hockey is a family event in our household.  I grew up with a brother and sister who play competitive hockey and we all go to cheer them on.  As a country we also produce the greatest hockey players (e.g. Gretsky/ Crosby) – with more than ½ of the NHL draft coming from Canada each year.

June 2014 Joannes Phone 135 (Medium)320559_10150456896226140_879073331_n

#6 – Patriotism – Canadians are proud and love to show it on Canada Day and every other day!  The maple leaf is symbolic of our pride and we wear our red and white proudly, especially when we travel!  In my hometown everyone gets into the Canada Day spirit!

#5 – Seasons – Canada has the most beautiful seasons – Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.  Each has its own beauty and We get to benefit from all the seasonal activities that go along with them – such as snow skiing, paddle boarding, kayaking etc.  From the changing leaves in the fall, to the snow falling in the winter, and the beauty of the flowers budding in the spring, and the sun blazing in the summer – we have it all!  This is the same view from my backyard in two of the seasons (can you guess which one’s?):

#4 – Music – Canada has some of the greatest musicians in the world from iconic diva’s like Celine Dion to pop stars like Nelly Furtado and Drake and many bands such as Hedley.  There is music of every variety for everyone.  Outdoor concerts are the best too – here is 54-40 who recently played near my home:

#3 – Multiculturalism – Canada is a diverse and inclusive country.  We have so many different cultures and it is great to learn about the people and their heritage and beliefs etc.  We embrace people of all skin colours, religions, and gender preferences.  For example, I love going to Greekfest every year with my family and enjoying their great food and dancing.

Alicia 2015 after parade 2239

#2 – Health Care – We have one of the best healthcare systems in the world.  My mom is a nurse and I plan to be one as well.  Nobody is turned away because they cannot pay for their treatment or care.

Halloween 2014 026.1

#1   – Miss Teenage Canada! – Having this opportunity to represent my hometown city and province at the Miss Teenage Canada National Pageant in August is a thrill of a lifetime!   I feel so proud and excited for the opportunity and know I will make some lasting memories and friendships from this experience.

11026276_1801375530087077_4843001691705662554_n 11037630_10152691806956752_3735141606689092751_n 11043088_10152691807626752_7406320656362702705_n

Yes – Canada is Great!  From the great people, to the beauty of our landscape and nature, to the things we get to enjoy each and everyday… we are so lucky to call Canada our home!
